A procession of hundreds of people holding candles walked through the streets of Paris to bring a famed statue of the Virgin Mary and child back to Notre-Dame Cathedral on Friday, five years after it was moved to a nearby church after a devastating fire.

Precious ornaments, including a 14th-century statue of the Virgin Mary, are being returned to Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral as the church prepares to reopen after it was devastated by a fire in 2019. Here’s how the iconic cathedral has been restored since the blaze.

"This celebration of the reopening of Notre-Dame deserves an octave: from December 8 to 15, each day, we will have a solemn celebration with a particular theme ", says the archbishop of Paris, who wants "the people of Paris to be present at these reopening celebrations ". Each morning, at 10:30 a.m., the archbishop will preside over a mass.
